Coming in the Fall, an exhibition of Ilan Averbuch's monumental sculpture:

Self Portrait 2008 154 x 182 x 144 inches Glass, lead, and steel

Self Portrait is a manifestation of the artist’s reading of himself; the way he wants to be seen, or the way he perceives himself to be. In this work Averbuch “uses” the subject with great freedom. The image is not a realistic “portrait” depiction. The image in the frame is of a glass and steel tree, large and wide, not entirely transparent, revealing an inner structure through bluish etched glass leaves. Ilan in Hebrew is one of the words for tree. The glass tree in this piece can have many readings: a vessel, a water collector, a goblet – another image often used by the artist. The scale is monumental yet fragile. The frame is heroic, though the surface is lead, a non-heroic material.
